these are the instructions from Posterous but my Godaddy won’t let me do this and says under DNS that it is hosted elsewhere, but I don’t know where to change it at Hostgator.

If you are using hostgators nameservers and not the default godaddy domaincontrol.com nameservers you cannot add A records as that states with godaddy. You would need to contact the hostgator support team via phone or get on live chat and ask them to add this A record for you. Once you verify account ownership of the account they can do this for you and within a few hours it should be accessible via the subdomain itself through your domain that is hosted with them.
